A catalytic converter converts exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine into less-polluting pollutants to catalyze an organic reduction reaction. Gaseous emissions are formed when gasoline is burned in an internal combustion engine. Some gases pass through the exhaust pipes, and combine with oxygen in the exhaust gases. Many gases escape the engine via the exhaust outlets. These are known as particulate emission. The catalytic converter reduces these particulates so they do not escape into the air.

There are many kinds of gaseous emissions that can be combusted by the catalytic converter. They include hydrocarbons along with carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides or carbon monoxide. The catalytic conversion actually consists of two chemicals. One being a reduction catalyst and another being a reductase. A reduction catalyst reduces the toxic metal in the catalyst, allowing the reaction. These emissions are illegal and can cause serious problems, such as emission-induced engine melting and even possible engine failure.

Many catalytic conversions on today’s market don’t burn platinum. They instead burn palladium or sterling. While palladium does work extremely well at removing pollutants, it is expensive to manufacture, thus it is much less common than platinum.
