Many books deal with the death of a companion animal and subsequent grieving. This article is an excerpt from the book The Legacy of Beezer and Boomer: Lessons on Living and Dying from My Canine Brothers written by Doug Koktavy, a self-employed creditor’s attorney in Denver. Are you ready to go for a swim? Indeed, summer gives you a very good excuse to take a dip. However, with dog life vests, trunks, boxer shorts, and swimsuits, you will never have to leave your pooch ashore. You can always take him with you as you compete for the first one to reach a particular spot. Hey, as long as you can strap him close to you, you can even go parasailing or jet-skiing with him!
Of course the obvious remedy is to keep the doors shut, but if puppy does get manage to get in, then just firmly remove him with no fuss. Each member of the family have got to be aware of the puppy no-go zones and accept the arrangement. Each person has to enforce the regulations and remove dog if he manages to enter a no-go zone. In time he will be aware of that these areas are not for him.
The biggest mistake people make is buying cheap nylon leashes and collars, or fashion collars. They don’t last. They fray, wear out, or discolor. Buy a good quality leather collar and leash. It’s an investment that is worth it over time, because quality leather can last 15 years. Your dog doesn’t need a different looking collar every season! One annoyance some pet parents have is their dog chewing their leashes- this is a bad behavior and needs to be corrected through training.
For our lab, we have the option to take one of the back seats out so that he has plenty of room to stretch out. The Papillion gets an old pillow to rest on, or you may have a Hundeseng på ben. Try to keep as much familiar for them as possible. This assists in keeping restlessness to a minimum.
Even if it’s raining, they’ll happily go out with you as opposed to just going in the garden. But with rain comes mud, and even after it stops, it’s still going to be wet and muddy. Taking your dog out can be fun but messy. They’ll go running, they’ll go splashing, and they’ll get covered in mud, but you won’t mind. You’ll be thinking ‘thank god I have my waterproof dog bed’. This is where you can really benefit from owning one.
Small household items such as pins, paper clips, earrings and coins should be kept away from your puppy. Small items such as this will look appealing and are also easily ingested.
Take a little time and put in a little effort and both you and your dog will get a great nights sleep and wake up refreshed and ready for the new day!
