Thirty years ago the inventory of BMW parts didn’t include the oxygen sensor. Originally invented as part of the effort to reduce auto emissions, these sensors also affect your engine’s performance by helping to assure an ideal fuel/air mixture.
Brake boosters are a new feature in this car. The bumpers are usual as before with being black in colour. The seat adjustment system is manual. The speedometer has a new design with a digital fuel meter. The engine immobiliser and the tail lamp cluster are new add-ons. The catalytic converter recycling Converter makes the car eco friendly.
One option is to simply replace the bearings. But, that is merely a stop-gap measure. Chances are, if the bearings are damaged, a mechanic will need to resurface the crankshaft. That can be expensive.
The use of hydrogen as fuel is advantageous but it is not suitable for engines with compression ratio of 9.5:1. Engines with superchargers or turbochargers have a compression ratio of 9.5:1. As the hydrogen burns faster than the normal petroleum fuel, it can inflict serious damage to the engine. So, such hydrogen conversion kits cannot be suggested for diesel-powered vehicles.
At low power outputs (no boost) scrap O2 sensor recycling equipped cars require a fuel mixture of Lambda 0.99 (AFR 14.64) for best emissions, and is the target fuel mixture when the OE ECU is operating in closed loop. Improvements in fuel economy can be made by leaning fuel mixtures off to Lambda 1.05 (AFR 15.4 to 1), but this is done at the expense of cat converter operation and will increase exhaust temperatures when cruising.
The more aggressively you drive, the sooner you’ll need to have your brakes repaired. Most brake jobs focus solely on the pads. The pads wear down and need to be replaced before they begin grinding against the rotors. When that happens, you’ll need to have the rotors machined.
Verify that the vehicle identification number on the car matches on all parts including the engine, the dashboard and other places where the vehicle manufacturer posts this number. Ask a mechanic for his opinion about the car, with expected repairs and the costs that would need to be within the coming year. Factor that information into the price you are willing to pay and negotiate from a position of knowledge and strength.
